Slug Generator

Turn a title into a lowercase URL slug joined by hyphens or underscores. Accents go, ß, æ and ø are spelled out, and letters with no Latin form are listed. How it works

Use the Slug Generator

About the Slug Generator

“Straße” becomes strasse and “Hello, World” becomes hello-world. The slug generator lowercases the text, spells out ß, æ, œ, ø and similar letters, drops accents, deletes punctuation and joins the words with single hyphens. Letters that have no Latin form, such as Cyrillic or Chinese, are left out and listed under the slug.

Letters that are spelled out

LetterWritten as
ßss
æae
œoe
øo
łl
đd
ðd
þth
ħh
ıi
ŧt
ŋn

Capitals are lowercased first, so Æ and Ø give ae and o. Other accented letters, such as é, ü and ñ, are split into a base letter and an accent, and the accent is dropped.

Compatibility forms such as the fi ligature, ① and the full-width A become plain ASCII. When the slug is empty the tool says there are no Latin letters or digits to build one from.

How to use this tool

  1. Type or paste a title in Input Text.
  2. Read the Generated Slug. It updates as you type.
  3. If a message lists letters that were left out, write a Latin spelling of those words in the input.
  4. Press the copy button next to the slug.

Frequently asked questions

What is a URL slug?
The part of a URL that names one page, such as my-first-post in /blog/my-first-post. A CMS usually builds it from the title when you first save a post, and changing it later changes the page’s address.
Should a slug use hyphens or underscores?
Google’s URL guidance recommends hyphens between words and advises against underscores. The Separator menu starts on hyphen, so snake_case and-hyphen becomes snake-case-and-hyphen. Underscore is there for a file name or a system that needs it: the same text gives snake_case_and_hyphen.
Does the slug affect SEO or ranking?
Google’s URL structure page recommends descriptive words and hyphens and talks about crawling; it does not say that a slug changes ranking. This tool makes a readable, lowercase, ASCII slug and makes no claim beyond that.
Why is my slug empty, or missing words?
Only A to Z and 0 to 9 can be written, so letters with no Latin form are left out. Привет мир gives an empty slug and lists п, р, и, в, е, т and м, and 日本語 title gives title with 日, 本 and 語 listed. Write a Latin spelling of those words in the input if they belong in the URL.
What happens to apostrophes and & in a title?
They are deleted, not turned into words or hyphens. It’s Here gives its-here, Rock & Roll gives rock-roll, AT&T Deals gives att-deals and Q&A: Part 2 gives qa-part-2. If the word matters, type it out first: Rock and Roll gives rock-and-roll.
Should a slug be lowercase?
Google treats URL paths as case sensitive, so /APPLE and /apple count as different URLs. The tool always lowercases, which keeps one spelling for each page.
