About the Steps to Miles Calculator
10,000 steps is about 4.17 miles (6.71 km) for someone 5 ft 4 in tall, using a step length of 0.413 × height, which is 26.4 in. Distance is steps × step length, so a taller walker covers more ground: at 6 ft 0 in the same 10,000 steps is 4.69 miles. This steps to miles calculator takes the step length from your height or from a length you measured yourself.

Steps per mile is 1,609.344 m divided by the step length. The two factors are a rule of thumb for walking, so treat these as typical figures for a height, not as your own.
Walking speed to steps per minute, with the step length from height (0.413 × height)
| Speed (mph) | Speed (km/h) | Minutes per mile | Steps per minute at 5 ft 4 in | Steps per minute at 6 ft 0 in |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2.0 | 3.2 | 30:00 | 80 | 71 |
| 2.5 | 4.0 | 24:00 | 100 | 89 |
| 3.0 | 4.8 | 20:00 | 120 | 107 |
| 3.5 | 5.6 | 17:09 | 140 | 124 |
| 4.0 | 6.4 | 15:00 | 160 | 142 |
Steps per minute = mph × steps per mile ÷ 60, with 2,397 steps per mile at 5 ft 4 in and 2,131 at 6 ft 0 in. The calculator uses one step length at every speed, so here the cadence rises in step with the speed. If your step is longer when you walk fast, measure it at that pace and enter it under “I know my step length”.
Methodology
Distance = steps × step length. The step length is either one you enter, or height × 0.413 (the factor often quoted for women) or height × 0.415 (often quoted for men). The result is given in miles and kilometers, with steps per mile and per kilometer, using 1 mile = 1,609.344 m and 1 inch = 2.54 cm exactly.
How to use this tool
- Enter the number of steps.
- Choose “Estimate from my height” and enter your height, or choose “I know my step length” and enter it.
- If you estimate from height, pick the 0.413 or the 0.415 factor.
- Read the miles, the kilometers, the step length used and the steps per mile and per kilometer.
Frequently asked questions
- How many steps are in a mile?
- About 2,000 to 2,600, depending on height. By the 0.413 rule it is 2,557 steps at 5 ft 0 in, 2,397 at 5 ft 4 in, 2,256 at 5 ft 8 in, 2,131 at 6 ft 0 in and 2,019 at 6 ft 4 in.
- How many miles is 5,000 steps?
- 2.09 miles at 5 ft 4 in and 2.35 miles at 6 ft 0 in, with the 0.413 factor. For other counts at the same two heights: 7,500 steps is 3.13 and 3.52 miles, and 20,000 steps is 8.34 and 9.39 miles.
- How do I measure my step length?
- Walk a distance you know at your usual pace, count the steps and divide the distance by the count. If 100 ft takes you 40 steps, your step is 30 in. Enter 30 in under “I know my step length” and 10,000 steps comes to 4.73 miles, at 2,112 steps per mile.
- Where do the factors 0.413 and 0.415 come from?
- They are a rule of thumb: step length ≈ 0.413 × height for women and 0.415 × height for men. Researchers use the same two factors to turn step counts into distance, for example in a 2022 wearable-sensor study in npj Digital Medicine. They describe a typical walker of a given height, which is why a step length you measured is the better input.
- Does it estimate calories burned?
- No. Calories depend on body weight, speed and terrain, none of which a step count records, so the page reports distance only.
