About the Pace Calculator
Running pace is time divided by distance. 5 km in 25:00 is 5:00 per kilometer, which is 8:03 per mile, 12.00 km/h or 7.46 mph. Held for a whole race, that pace gives 50:00 for 10K, 1:45:29 for a half marathon and 3:30:59 for a marathon.

The same pace held for the whole distance. Half marathon = 21.0975 km, marathon = 42.195 km, 1 mile = 1.609344 km. Paces and times are rounded to the nearest second.
Methodology
Pace per km = total seconds ÷ distance in km. Pace per mile = pace per km × 1.609344. Speed in km/h = distance in km ÷ time in hours, and mph = km/h ÷ 1.609344. A distance in miles, meters or yards is converted to kilometers first (1 yard = 0.9144 m). Paces and finish times are rounded to the nearest second and speeds to two decimals. Finish times multiply the unrounded pace by 5, 10, 21.0975 and 42.195 km. In Time mode, time = distance × pace; in Distance mode, distance = time ÷ pace, with a pace per mile divided by 1.609344 first.
How to use this tool
- Pick what to solve for: Pace (from a distance and a time), Time (from a distance and a pace) or Distance (from a time and a pace).
- Enter the distance and choose kilometers, miles, meters or yards.
- Enter the time in hours, minutes and seconds. An empty box counts as 0, and decimals work: 1.5 minutes is 90 seconds.
- For Time or Distance, enter the pace in minutes and seconds per km or per mile.
- Read the result with the pace per km and per mile, the speed in km/h and mph, and the finish times at that pace.
Frequently asked questions
- What pace do I need to run a marathon in 4 hours?
- About 5:41 per km, or 9:09 per mile. That is what 42.195 km in 4:00:00 works out to. At 5:30 per km (8:51 per mile) a marathon takes 3:52:04. To go from a pace to a time, pick Time: 10 km at 5:30 per km is 55:00.
- How do I convert pace per km to pace per mile?
- Multiply by 1.609344. 5:00 per km is 300 seconds, and 300 × 1.609344 = 483 seconds, or 8:03 per mile. 6:00 per km is 9:39 per mile.
- What pace is a 30-minute 5K?
- 6:00 per km, or 9:39 per mile, which is 10.00 km/h (6.21 mph). At that pace a 10K takes 1:00:00 and a half marathon 2:06:35. Pick Distance to see how far a pace takes you in a set time: 1:30:00 at 6:00 per km is 15 km, or 9.321 miles.
- How do I turn running pace into speed?
- Divide 60 by the pace in minutes per km to get km/h. 5:00 per km is 12.00 km/h, and 12 ÷ 1.609344 = 7.46 mph. The calculator shows both speeds beside the two paces.
- Can I enter a track distance in meters?
- Yes. Choose Meters or Yards as the unit. 400 m in 1:30 is 3:45 per km, 6:02 per mile and 16.00 km/h.
