About the Swim Pace Calculator
500 m in 10:00 is a pace of 2:00 per 100 m, a speed of 0.83 m/s or 3.00 km/h. The swim pace calculator divides your total time by the distance in hundreds, rounds to the whole second and shows it as minutes and seconds per 100 meters or per 100 yards.
Pace per 100 m and speed
| Pace per 100 m | Speed (m/s) | Speed (km/h) |
|---|---|---|
| 1:30 | 1.11 | 4.00 |
| 1:40 | 1.00 | 3.60 |
| 1:50 | 0.91 | 3.27 |
| 2:00 | 0.83 | 3.00 |
| 2:15 | 0.74 | 2.67 |
| 2:30 | 0.67 | 2.40 |
Speeds as the calculator shows them, to two decimals.
Total time for a steady pace per 100 m

|---|---|---|---|---|
| 100 m | 1:30 | 1:45 | 2:00 | 2:15 |
| 200 m | 3:00 | 3:30 | 4:00 | 4:30 |
| 400 m | 6:00 | 7:00 | 8:00 | 9:00 |
| 800 m | 12:00 | 14:00 | 16:00 | 18:00 |
| 1500 m | 22:30 | 26:15 | 30:00 | 33:45 |
The time you would enter to get that pace: each cell, typed into the calculator with its distance, returns the pace in the column heading.
How to use this tool
- Choose what to solve for: Pace (the default), Time or Distance.
- Enter the two known values: distance (meters or yards), total time as MM:SS or H:MM:SS, or pace per 100 as M:SS.
- Read the pace per 100 and the speed in m/s and km/h, or the total time or distance.
Frequently asked questions
- How do I calculate swim pace per 100 m?
- Divide the total time in seconds by the distance divided by 100. 400 m in 6:40 is 400 seconds over 4 hundreds, so 100 seconds, or 1:40 per 100 m. 1500 m in 25:00 is also 1:40.
- What is a good swim pace per 100 m?
- It depends on the stroke, the pool length and how long the swim is, so the calculator does not grade a pace. Compare yourself with your own swims over the same distance: going from 2:00 to 1:50 per 100 m over 400 m takes 40 seconds off the swim. For scale, 2:00 per 100 m is 3.00 km/h and 1:30 is 4.00 km/h.
- Is pace per 100 yards the same as per 100 meters?
- No. 100 yards is 91.44 m, so the same pace number is a slower speed per 100 yards. 500 yd in 10:00 is 2:00 per 100 yd and 0.76 m/s; 500 m in 10:00 is 2:00 per 100 m and 0.83 m/s.
- What time format does the calculator take?
- MM:SS with seconds from 00 to 59, such as 10:00, or H:MM:SS, such as 1:05:30, from 1 second to 24 hours. A bare 10 or 1:2:3 shows a message and no result. The distance can be 1 to 20,000.
- How long will a swim take at my pace?
- Choose Solve for Time and enter the distance and the pace: time = pace × distance ÷ 100. 400 m at 1:45 per 100 m is 7:00, and 1500 m at 1:40 is 25:00. Solve for Distance does the reverse: 30:00 at 1:45 per 100 m covers 1714.3 m. Both assume you hold one pace throughout.
- How do I convert swim pace to speed in km/h?
- Speed in m/s is 100 ÷ the pace in seconds per 100 m, and km/h is that times 3.6. A 1:40 pace is 100 seconds, so 1.00 m/s and 3.60 km/h. A 2:00 pace gives 0.83 m/s and 3.00 km/h.
