About the Marathon Pace Strategy

A 4:00:00 marathon is 9:09 per mile or 5:41 per km at an even pace, with 2:00:00 at halfway. The page lists every split for that pace, for a negative split that spends 50.5% of the goal on the first half, and for a plan that starts slower than average and speeds up evenly to the finish.

Paces to the second as the calculator shows them, for a marathon of 42.195 km (26.2188 miles). Halfway on the even plan is exactly half the goal. For a pace you already run, the Pace Calculator turns minutes per km or mile into 5K to marathon finish times.

How to use this tool

  1. Type the goal finish time in hours, minutes and seconds, from 1:30:00 to 8:00:00.
  2. Pick Even, Negative or Cardiac Drift, and Miles or Kilometers.
  3. Read the Checkpoints table for your 5K, 10K, half and 30K times.
  4. Copy the split table onto a pace band or into a watch workout, or press Print pace band. The last row is the final 0.219 mile (0.195 km).

Frequently asked questions

What pace do I need for a sub-4-hour marathon?
Faster than 9:09 per mile, or 5:41 per km, held for the whole race. On the negative split that is 9:15 per mile to halfway (2:01:12) and 9:04 per mile after it.
What is a negative split in a marathon?
Running the second half faster than the first. This page gives the first half 50.5% of your goal time and the second 49.5%, so the second half is about 2% quicker: for a 3:00:00 goal, 6:56 per mile and then 6:48.
What does the Cardiac Drift plan do?
It is a steady speed-up, not a heart-rate model. Pace starts 1% slower than average for every hour of goal time and ends the same amount faster, so a 4:00:00 plan opens at 9:30 per mile and finishes at 8:48. The 1% per hour figure is this calculator’s own assumption, and the plan is a steeper negative split than the Negative option.
Why is the last split 0.2 miles?
A marathon is 42.195 km, which is 26.2188 miles, so after mile 26 there is 0.219 mile left (0.195 km after km 42). The table shows its average pace and a cumulative time that equals your goal.
What should my 10K and half marathon splits be for a 4-hour marathon?
At an even pace, 28:26 at 5K, 56:53 at 10K, 2:00:00 at halfway and 2:50:38 at 30K. On the Negative plan they are 28:43, 57:27, 2:01:12 and 2:51:20, because the first half is run a little slower. The Checkpoints table on the page shows these for any goal and plan, and Print pace band prints them with the splits.
