Frequently asked questions
- How do I split a restaurant bill and tip evenly?
- Multiply the bill by the tip percentage, add it to the bill and divide by the number of diners. A $120 bill with an 18% tip is a $21.60 tip and $141.60 in all, which is $35.40 each between 4 diners.
- What does Round Up Tip Per Person do?
- It rounds the tip per person up to a whole dollar and charges that to every diner, so the total tip goes up with it. A $120 bill at 15% across 4 diners is a $4.50 tip each; rounded up it is $5.00 each, the total tip is $20.00 instead of $18.00 and the grand total is $140.00 instead of $138.00.
- Can I enter a tip in dollars instead of a percentage?
- Yes. Switch to Custom Amount and type the tip. A $50 bill with a $10 tip between 2 diners is $30.00 each and $60.00 in all.
- How much should each person tip?
- The calculator does not suggest a tip: it applies the percentage or amount you choose. The presets are 10%, 15%, 18%, 20% and 25%. Local custom and any service charge already on the bill are not known to it. As a point of reference for the US, the Emily Post Institute’s tipping guide gives 15 to 20% of the pre-tax bill for a sit-down server, 15 to 20% of the tab (or $1 to $2 a drink) for a bartender, 10 to 15% for delivery and no obligation for takeout, with 10% for extra service.
- Is the tip worked out before or after tax?
- Before tax unless you choose otherwise. Enter the bill before tax and the tax in the Tax field: a $50 bill with $4 tax and a 20% tip between 2 diners is a $10.00 tip, $64.00 in all and $32.00 each. Tick Tip on bill + tax and the tip is 20% of $54, $10.80, for $64.80 in all and $32.40 each.
- What number of diners is accepted?
- A whole number of 1 or more. Decimals, negative numbers and forms such as 1e3 are refused with a message. The tool warns when the bill is above $10,000 or the tip is above 100%.
