About the Tournament Score Keeper

Wins are worth 3 points, draws 1 and losses 0. Teams are ranked by points, then wins, then point difference, then points scored, and teams level on all four share a rank. Round-robin mode schedules every pair once, so 8 teams play 28 matches; Swiss mode pairs neighbours in the standings each round, gives the odd team out a bye worth 3 points, and puts Buchholz (the sum of the opponents’ points) between wins and point difference.

Every pair plays once: n × (n − 1) ÷ 2 matches, as the schedule the tool generates lists them.

Matches: A 1–0 B, A 0–5 D, C 3–3 B, C 3–3 D, C 3–3 E, in Round-Robin mode. A and C both have 3 points, but A has a win, so A ranks higher despite the worse difference.

Round 1: A 1–0 B, C 3–0 D. Round 2: A 1–1 C, B 2–0 D. A and C are level on points and wins; A’s opponents scored 7 points and C’s 4, so A ranks first in Swiss mode. The same results in Round-Robin mode put C first on point difference.

Frequently asked questions

How do you break ties in a round-robin tournament standing?
Here the order is points, then wins, then point difference, then points scored. Head-to-head results are not used: if A beat C and they finish level on points, wins and difference decide it, not that match. Teams still level after all four share a rank, marked =, and the next rank is skipped, so a table can read 1, 2, 2, 4. Some leagues put head-to-head first, so check your league rules if that matters.
How many matches are in a round-robin with 8 teams?
28. Each of the 8 teams plays the other 7 once, and each match involves two teams: 8 × 7 ÷ 2 = 28. With 16 teams it is 120.
How does Swiss pairing work in this scorekeeper?
Round 1 is a random shuffle. Later rounds sort the teams by the Swiss ranking (points, wins, Buchholz, point difference, points scored) and pair neighbours, skipping opponents already met where another is left. Next Round unlocks when every match of the round is played.
What is the Buchholz score?
The sum of the points of every opponent a team has played, shown in the Buch column in Swiss mode. Beating strong teams gives a higher Buchholz than beating weak ones, so it breaks a tie on points and wins before point difference. In the Swiss example A has 7 and C 4, so A ranks first. A bye adds nothing to it; FIDE counts a bye against a virtual opponent instead, so a chess arbiter’s figure can differ. Round-robin rankings do not use it, since everyone plays everyone.
What is a bye and how many points does it give?
With an odd number of teams one team has no opponent. The lowest-ranked team that has not had a bye takes it, and it counts as a win: 3 points and one match played, with no score, no change to point difference and nothing added to Buchholz.
How are draws and scores entered?
Type a whole number from 0 to 9,999 for each team. Equal scores are a draw and give each team 1 point. A blank name shows as Team 1, Team 2 and so on.
