About the Anagram Checker

Two texts are anagrams when they use the same letters and numbers the same number of times, in any order. "listen" and "silent" are anagrams (both sort to eilnst) and "hello" and "world" are not. The checker ignores case, accents, spaces and punctuation, so "Dormitory" and "dirty room" match, and it reads letters in any script.

Folded means lower-cased, with Latin accent marks, spaces, punctuation and emoji removed. The folded texts are compared letter by letter after sorting.

How to use this tool

  1. Type or paste one word or phrase in each box.
  2. Read the Anagram check result: "Anagrams" or "Not anagrams".
  3. If a box holds no letter or number, the page asks for one instead of giving a verdict.

Frequently asked questions

Does an anagram checker ignore spaces, capitals and punctuation?
This one does. Spaces, punctuation, emoji and capital letters are ignored, so "Dormitory" and "dirty room" are anagrams. Digits count as characters: "12 34" and "43 21" match too.
How do you check if two words are anagrams?
Write each word without spaces and put its letters in alphabetical order. If the two sorted strings are the same, the words are anagrams. "night" and "thing" both sort to ghint. A quicker first test is length: "stressed" and "desserts" both have 8 letters, so they can match, while two words of different lengths never can.
Do accents matter in an anagram check?
Not for Latin letters: the accent marks are dropped, so "résumé" and "resume" are the same word. Marks of other scripts, such as Devanagari vowel signs, are kept, because dropping them would change the word.
Why does the page ask for a letter or number instead of saying "not anagrams"?
If one box holds only symbols, such as "!!!", there is nothing to compare. The page shows "Type a letter or number in both boxes" instead of a verdict. Two empty boxes show a prompt too.
Can it find anagrams of a word?
No. It compares the two texts you type and has no word list. When they do not match, it does not say which letters differ.
