Three fonts, upper case only: standard (5 rows, 7 columns per character), small (4 columns, 5 rows) and tall (7 rows, 6 columns). Lower-case letters are drawn as capitals and accented letters without the accent. Supported characters: A-Z, 0-9, space and !?.,-:'+=_/()#. Each line break starts a new banner. The art is plain text, so it keeps its shape only in a monospaced font.

About the ASCII Art Generator

The ASCII art generator draws each character as a block letter made of text, so HELLO becomes a banner 5 rows high and 33 columns wide in the standard 5 by 5 font. Two more fonts are offered: small, 3 columns by 5 rows (HELLO is 19 columns), and tall, a 5 by 7 dot matrix (29 columns, 7 rows). All three are upper case only, cover A to Z, 0 to 9 and 14 punctuation marks, and draw each letter with itself (H with H), with # or with the full block █.

Lower case is drawn in capitals and accents are dropped. A character with no glyph leaves a gap the width of a letter, and the page lists it under the output.

Width in columns. Trailing spaces are removed, so a line of n characters is at most 7 × n − 2 columns wide in Standard (5 columns plus a 2-column gap), 4 × n − 1 in Small (3 plus 1) and 6 × n − 1 in Tall (5 plus 1). ß is drawn as SS and takes the room of two characters. Standard and Small banners are 5 rows high, Tall banners 7.

Frequently asked questions

How do I make ASCII art text?
Type your text in the box and the banner appears below it. Each line break starts a new banner underneath, with a blank row between them. Press Copy and paste the result where every character has the same width, such as a code block, a terminal or a .txt file.
Which characters does the ASCII art font support?
A to Z, 0 to 9, space and the 14 marks ! ? . , - : ' + = _ / ( ) #. Lower-case letters are drawn as capitals, accents are dropped (é is drawn as E) and ß is drawn as SS. Anything else, such as @, &, emoji or Cyrillic letters, leaves a blank gap and is listed under the output.
How wide can ASCII art text be for an 80-column terminal?
11 characters in the standard font. Each character takes 5 columns plus 2 blank ones, so 11 characters make a banner 75 columns wide and 12 make one 82 columns wide. The small font fits 20 characters (79 columns) and the tall font 13 (77 columns).
Why does my ASCII art look broken after I paste it?
The shapes line up only when every character has the same width. In a proportional font, as in most chat apps and email bodies, a space is narrower than a letter and the letters fall apart. Paste it into a code block or set it in a monospaced font such as Courier.
Can I choose a different ASCII art font?
Yes, from three. Standard is the 5 by 5 block font; Small is 3 columns wide and 5 rows high; Tall is a 5 by 7 dot-matrix font. All three were drawn for this site rather than taken from FIGlet font files, and each can be drawn with the letter itself, # or the full block █.
