About the Birth Chart Calculator

This birth chart calculator needs only a date of birth and returns six lookups: Sun sign, the Moon's phase that day, the Chinese zodiac animal and element, a numerology life path number, the birthstone and the generation. For 15 July 1990 it gives a Last Quarter moon and the Metal Horse. It is not an astrological natal chart: without a birth time and place it cannot give a rising sign, houses or planet positions.

A date before that year's Lunar New Year belongs to the previous Chinese year, which is why 20 January 1985 is a Rat and 1 January 2000 a Rabbit.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my Chinese zodiac sign different from my birth year?
The Chinese year starts at Lunar New Year, between 21 January and 20 February, not on 1 January. Born on 1 January 2000, you belong to 1999, the Earth Rabbit; from 5 February 2000 it is the Metal Dragon.
Do I need my birth time for a birth chart?
Not for this tool, which uses the date only. A full natal chart with a rising sign and houses needs the exact time and place of birth, and this calculator does not compute one.
How is the Moon phase on my birthday worked out?
From the mean synodic month of 29.530588861 days, counted from the new moon of 6 January 2000 at 18:14 UTC to noon UTC on your birth date, and sorted into eight phases. The real Moon can run several hours ahead of or behind the mean, so a birthday on the edge of a phase can be one phase off.
How is the life path number calculated?
The day, month and year are each reduced to one digit by adding their digits, keeping 11, 22 and 33 as master numbers. The three are added and reduced the same way.
Which generation am I?
The tool follows Pew Research Center for Generation X (born 1965 to 1980) and Millennials (1981 to 1996). It labels 1997 to 2012 Generation Z, 2013 to 2024 Generation Alpha and 2025 onward Generation Beta.
Are the trait descriptions predictions?
No. The short lines under the Sun sign, Chinese zodiac and life path are traditional wording, for entertainment. The phase and the Chinese year are calendar arithmetic.

What the birth profile shows

Enter a date of birth and the tool shows six lookups, for entertainment: the Western Sun sign, the Moon's phase that day, the Chinese zodiac animal and element, a numerology life path number, the birthstone and the generation label. For 15 July 1990 it returns Cancer, Last Quarter, Horse (Metal), life path 5, Ruby and Millennial (Gen Y).

Despite the name it is not an astrological birth chart: it computes no rising sign, houses or planet positions and asks for no time of birth. The Sun sign, Chinese zodiac and Life Path cards each add a short line of traditional trait wording, and the Generation card shows the birth years that label covers. None of the outputs is a prediction.

How each value is found

  • Sun sign: fixed calendar cut-offs (Capricorn to 19 January, Aquarius to 18 February, and so on), so a cusp birthday can come out either way.

  • Moon phase: cycle = (noon UTC on the date − 6 January 2000 18:14 UTC) ÷ 29.530588861 days, keeping the fraction; 0 is a new moon and 0.5 a full moon, mapped to eight phases (New Moon within 0.03 of a whole cycle, Full Moon within 0.03 of a half). This is the mean moon. Real lunations run from 29.26 to 29.80 days (Wikipedia, New moon), so the real phase can be hours ahead of or behind the mean one, and a date on a phase edge can be one phase off. 8 April 2024, a solar eclipse and so a new moon, gives New Moon.

  • Chinese zodiac: the Chinese year starts at Lunar New Year, taken from the Hong Kong Observatory's tables for 1901 to 2100. A date before that year's Lunar New Year belongs to the previous year, so 1 January 2000 is still the Earth Rabbit and 5 February 2000 the Metal Dragon. year mod 12 gives the animal, the last digit the element (0–1 Metal, 2–3 Water, 4–5 Wood, 6–7 Fire, 8–9 Earth). Outside those years it switches on 5 February.

  • Life path: day, month and year are each reduced to one digit (keeping 11, 22 and 33), added, and reduced again.

  • Birthstone: one stone per month.

  • Generation: Gen X 1965–1980 and Millennials 1981–1996 follow Pew Research Center; 2013–2024 is Generation Alpha and 2025 onward Generation Beta.
