About the Currency Converter
This currency converter multiplies your amount by a reference exchange rate from ExchangeRate-API that is published once a day, and shows the date of the rates it used. The result is a reference figure, not a quote: a bank, card provider or exchange counter sets its own rate and fees, so the amount you pay or receive will differ.
What the notices on the page mean

How to use this tool
- Type the amount.
- Choose the From and To currencies. The list can be searched by code or name, and the currencies you used recently come first.
- Read the result, the rate for one unit under it, and the date of the rates.
- Use the swap button to reverse the pair, the refresh button to download the rates again, and Reset to go back to 100 USD to EUR.
Frequently asked questions
- Is this the real-time exchange rate?
- No. The rates are published once a day and the page shows their date. Your browser keeps a copy for up to 24 hours before it downloads them again, and the refresh button downloads them on request. Exchange rates move during the day, so ask your bank or broker for a live price.
- Why is my bank or card rate different?
- The page shows a once-a-day reference rate from ExchangeRate-API, which describes its rates as indicative midpoint rates and not suitable for forex trading, not a rate offered to customers. A bank, card provider or exchange counter sets its own rate, which can include a margin over the reference, and may charge a fee on top. Compare their quote with the figure here to see roughly what the exchange costs you.
- How is a conversion between two non-dollar currencies worked out?
- Every rate is stored as units of that currency per 1 US dollar. The amount is divided by the rate of the currency you have and multiplied by the rate of the one you want, so GBP to JPY goes through the dollar. The rate line under the result shows the cross rate for one unit.
- Why does a yen amount have no decimals?
- Results are rounded to the decimals each currency uses: none for the Japanese yen, two for the US dollar and the euro, three for the Bahraini dinar. 1234.5678 is shown as 1,235 in yen and 1,234.568 in Bahraini dinars.
- Does the converter send my amounts anywhere?
- No amounts are sent. The tool downloads exchange rates from CalcChef’s own exchange-rate service, which sees your IP address like any web request and relays the daily rates of ExchangeRate-API. Your recent currencies, your conversion history and the downloaded rates are kept in your browser until you press Clear Saved Values.
