About the Duplicate Word Finder
The duplicate word finder lists every word used two or more times, most repeated first, with its count, and separately lists a word typed twice in a row, such as "the the". Upper and lower case count as the same word, and every word is counted, including the, a and and, unless you tick Exclude common English words.
What counts as one word
| Text | Words read | Counted as |
|---|---|---|
| don't | 1 | don't |
| it’s | 1 | it's |
| 1 | ||
| Report report REPORT | 3 | report ×3 |
| café café | 2 | café ×2 |
| İstanbul ISTANBUL | 2 | istanbul ×2 |
| "quoted" quoted | 2 | quoted ×2 |
| self-made self made | 3 | self-made, self, made |
| 3.5 | 2 | 3, 5 |
| Hello_World | 1 | hello_world |
In café café the second word is typed as e plus a combining accent; Unicode normalisation makes the two the same. Curly and straight apostrophes match.
Frequently asked questions
- How do I find repeated words in a text?
- Paste the text into the box. The list next to it (below it on a phone) shows each word used twice or more with its count, and the box under the input shows your text with those words marked. Words typed twice in a row are listed separately under "Same word twice in a row".
- Does it skip common words like the and and?
- Only if you ask. By default every word is counted, so in most English text the, and, of and a top the list. Tick Exclude common English words to leave 71 short words (articles, pronouns, prepositions, conjunctions and auxiliary verbs such as is, have and will) out of the list and the marked copy. A doubled "the the" is still listed under Same word twice in a row.
- Does it catch "the the" across a line break?
- Yes. A doubled word is the same word twice with only spaces, tabs or a line break between them. With punctuation between, as in "the, the", it is not counted as doubled, though both still count in the list of repeated words.
- Is the duplicate word check case-sensitive?
- No. Report, report and REPORT are one word. Accents are compared after Unicode normalisation, and the Turkish İ matches i, so İstanbul and ISTANBUL are one word; the dotless ı stays a different letter.
- Does it work with Chinese, Japanese or Thai text?
- Yes, with a caveat. These scripts are written without spaces, so the words are split by the browser's built-in word segmenter (Intl.Segmenter) and the page notes that the boundaries are an estimate. In a browser without it, each unbroken run counts as one word.
- How long a text can I check?
- The first 100,000 characters. The marked copy shows up to 20,000 characters, and the list shows the 500 most repeated words with the full total in its heading.
