Frequently asked questions

How do I copy and paste an emoji?
Click it. The emoji is copied to the clipboard and also appears in the Last picked box, so you can select it there if the browser blocks copying. Paste it with Ctrl+V or Cmd+V. The last 10 you copied are kept under Recently Used in this browser.
How do I change an emoji's skin tone?
Pick one of the six buttons next to Skin tone (default yellow and five tones) before you click the emoji. The tone applies to the 330 emoji that have tone variants; the 30 family emoji and every emoji outside People & Body stay as they are.
How does the emoji search work?
Each word you type must appear somewhere in the emoji's name, its group or one of its keywords, in any order, and part of a longer word counts. So cat finds 88 emoji: the cat faces, but also woozy face, whose keyword intoxicated contains "cat". Add a second word to narrow it: cat face finds 12, and heart red finds 3 (heart exclamation, heart on fire, red heart). Up to 300 results are shown.
Why does an emoji show as an empty box?
The device's emoji font is older than that emoji, so it has no picture for it. A toned emoji the font cannot combine may show as the emoji followed by a separate colour patch, as Unicode Technical Standard #51 describes for that fallback.
Why do flag emoji show as two letters on Windows?
Windows draws emoji with its Segoe UI Emoji font, which has no national flags, so a flag such as the Japanese one appears as the letters JP. The emoji itself is correct: copy it from the Flags group (270 emoji) and it shows as a flag on a phone or a Mac that receives it.
