When to use this tool

Planning a stack of holiday presents, batching gift wrapping for a wedding or party, quoting a small-business gift-wrapping service, or sizing a paper-roll purchase so you don't run out halfway through.

How the math works

For a box, paper is wrapped around the perimeter plus 8 times the overlap per fold; the width covers the height plus 2 times the width plus 4 times the overlap. For a cylinder, paper length is the circumference times the number of wraps plus 2 times the overlap. Areas are reported in square feet (imperial) or square meters (metric).

Fun Fact: The tradition of decorative gift wrapping as we know it was popularized in the early 1900s by Joyce Clyde Hall, founder of Hallmark Cards, who sold decorative envelope liners and later French tissue paper for wrapping.
