About the Image Converter
Open one image or up to 20, pick PNG, JPG or WebP and, for JPG or WebP, a quality from 1 to 100 (85 by default). The image converter draws each picture on a canvas in your browser and encodes it with the browser’s own encoder, shows the size before and after, and saves WebP only if the browser can make it. A batch downloads one by one or as a ZIP.
How to use this tool
- Choose an image file, up to 25 MB, or up to 20 images and 100 MB in all.
- Pick PNG, JPG or WebP as the target format, and a quality for JPG or WebP.
- Press Convert & Download and read the size change. For a batch, download each image or all of them as a ZIP.
Frequently asked questions
- How do I convert PNG to JPG?
- Choose the PNG, pick JPG as the target format and press Convert & Download. JPG has no transparency, so transparent areas are filled white before the image is drawn. The file is saved as converted-image.jpg at the quality you set, 85 by default, which is lossy.
- Does converting to WebP make the file smaller?
- Often, but this tool does not measure it. Google’s WebP study found the average WebP file 25% to 34% smaller than the matching JPEG at the same SSIM score. Here the result shows the size before and after, such as 2.3 MB to 585.9 KB (75% smaller), and a lower quality gives a smaller file.
- Why does it say my browser cannot save WebP?
- The page asks the browser to encode WebP and checks the file that comes back. A browser that cannot do it returns a PNG, and the page then shows "This browser cannot save WebP images. Choose PNG or JPG." instead of saving a PNG under a .webp name.
- Can I convert several images at once?
- Yes. Choose up to 20 images, 25 MB each and 100 MB in all. Each is converted in turn and keeps its own name with the new extension, with (2), (3) added to repeats, and nothing downloads until you press Download on one or Download all as ZIP for converted-images.zip. The converted images are kept up to 300 MB in all; an image past that is skipped with a message, so convert the rest in a second batch. The ZIP stores the files as they are, without compressing them again.
- Can I convert a GIF, SVG or HEIC file?
- The file picker takes any image type, and the page converts what your browser can display. An animated GIF is saved as a single still frame. An SVG is drawn at its own width and height; one that has none can stop with "The image dimensions could not be read." A HEIC photo from an iPhone works only in a browser that can show HEIC images; elsewhere the page says it could not decode the image.
- What quality does it save JPG and WebP at?
- At the quality you set, a whole number from 1 to 100, 85 by default; the browser receives it as 0.01 to 1. PNG is saved without loss and has no quality setting. JPG and WebP lose some detail, more at a lower quality, and converting a JPG to PNG does not bring back what the JPG already lost.
