Applications

Plan your laundry routine by estimating load sizes based on household size and laundry frequency. Determine if your current washer is the right size for your household's needs, or shop for a new washer with confidence. Also useful for laundromat visits — know how many machines you'll need and how much detergent to bring.

How It Works

The estimate is based on an average of 1.5 lbs of laundry per person per day. This includes clothing, undergarments, socks, and light towels. The total is multiplied by the number of days between loads to account for accumulation. Load type multipliers adjust the estimate: delicates (0.7x) weigh less due to lighter fabrics, normal/mixed (1.0x) is standard, and towels/bedding (1.5x) are heavier and bulkier. The recommended washer capacity suggests a machine size that can comfortably handle the estimated load without overpacking.

Fun Fact: The average washing machine in the US has a drum capacity of about 3.5 to 5 cubic feet, which can hold roughly 12 to 20 pounds of dry laundry — but overloading by just 1 lb can reduce cleaning efficiency by up to 30%!
