Applications

Used by roofers, carpenters, and construction professionals to determine correct material quantities, ensure proper water drainage, and comply with local building codes that specify minimum pitch requirements for different roofing materials.

How Roof Pitch Is Calculated

Roof pitch is expressed as the ratio of rise to run. A 6:12 roof rises 6 inches for every 12 inches of horizontal run. The angle is calculated using arctangent: angle = atan(rise/run). A 6:12 pitch equals 26.57 degrees. Pitch is also expressed as a percentage: (rise/run) x 100.

Fun Fact: The steepest residential roof ever built had a 22:12 pitch (about 61 degrees). Most conventional homes have 4:12 to 8:12 pitches, while flat roofs are technically anything under 2:12.
