How the score is made

The score is a simple rubric made for this tool, not a standard and not a verdict on your goal: it counts what you filled in. Specific: 10 points for a goal statement of at least 10 characters, 20 with detail text as well. Measurable: 10 points for a metric, 20 with a numeric target too. Achievable and Relevant: 4 points for each step of your own 1 to 5 rating (so rating a goal Very Easy earns the most). Time-bound: 5 points for under 7 days, 15 for 7 to 30 days, 18 for 31 to 90 days, 14 for 91 to 365 days, 8 for longer, 0 when the end comes before the start, plus 2 when the start date is today, plus 2 when a milestone line holds a date inside the span (the part never goes above 20). Stars: 30, 50, 70 and 90 points.

About the SMART Goal Builder

The goal run a marathon, with a detail, the metric miles run per week aiming for 30, both ratings at 3 and a 30-day span starting today scores 81 of 100 in this tool's rubric: 20 + 20 + 12 + 12 + 17, four stars. Each SMART letter is worth up to 20 points. The rubric was made for this tool and counts what you filled in; it does not judge whether the goal is a good one.

Frequently asked questions

What does SMART stand for in goal setting?
Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant and Time-bound. The builder asks for each one: the goal and a detail, a metric with a number, your own 1 to 5 ratings for how achievable and relevant it is, and start and end dates.
How is the SMART goal score calculated?
Each letter is worth up to 20 points for what you filled in: text for Specific, a metric and a number for Measurable, your two 1 to 5 ratings for Achievable and Relevant, and the length of the span for Time-bound. The tables on this page give every step. The rubric is this tool's own, not a published standard.
How long should a SMART goal timeline be?
The tool gives the most time-bound points, 18, to a span of 31 to 90 days, 15 to 7 to 30 days and 14 to 91 to 365 days, plus 2 when the start date is today. Those weights are the tool's choice, not research; it also suggests milestones for a timeline longer than a year.
What is an example of a SMART goal?
I will run a marathon. Specifically: Run 26.2 miles without stopping. I will measure progress by miles run per week, aiming for 30. I will start on October 12, 2026 and finish by November 11, 2026. Built on October 12, 2026, so that the start date is today, that goal scores 81: 8 points short on each of the two ratings left at 3, and 3 short on the 30-day span. On any other day the same dates score 79, because the 2-point bonus goes only to a start date of today.
Why does rating a goal very easy raise the score?
Achievable is scored from your own rating, 4 points per step, so 5 (Very Easy) earns 20 and 3 (Moderate) earns 12. The rubric reads a higher rating as a more reachable goal, so an easy goal outscores an ambitious one on this letter. The score counts what you entered and cannot check whether the rating is honest.
Do milestones change the SMART goal score?
Only a dated one. Type one milestone per line, up to 10; a line holding a date written as YYYY-MM-DD that falls between the start and end dates adds 2 time-bound points, up to the 20-point cap. The marathon example scores 81 when started today; with a milestone dated inside its 30 days it scores 83. A dated milestone outside the span earns nothing and brings a tip, and an undated line is added to the paragraph after Milestones: without changing the score.
