Text to Handwriting

Draw typed text in a handwriting-style web font on lined or plain paper, with your choice of ink color, and download it as a PNG image. How it works

Use the Text to Handwriting

Loading the handwriting font from Google Fonts. The picture redraws when it arrives.

The handwriting fonts are loaded from Google Fonts (fonts.googleapis.com and fonts.gstatic.com).

About the Text to Handwriting

Type your text and you get a PNG picture of it written in a handwriting-style font, on lined or plain paper, in any ink color. The choices are three Google fonts, Indie Flower, Caveat and Shadows Into Light, or your browser’s own cursive font. It is a typeface, not your own handwriting. The image is 800 px wide, saved as handwriting.png, and holds up to 300 lines; anything past that is left off.

Paper and line width

PaperText startsA line holdsRules
Lined Paper100 px from the left660 pxone under each line from 100 px down (every 40 px at 32 px text), red margin line at 80 px
Plain White40 px from the left720 pxnone

The page is 800 px wide. At the default 32 px text each line is 40 px below the one before; 24 px text uses 30 px lines and 40 px text 50 px lines. A line holds the page width minus the left start minus a 40 px right margin.

Page height by number of lines

LinesPage height
11,000 px
221,016 px
502,136 px
1004,136 px
30012,136 px

At the default 32 px text, height is the larger of 1,000 and 96 + 40 × (lines + 1) pixels. 300 lines is the most that is drawn: 9,126 px at 24 px text and 15,146 px at 40 px.

Frequently asked questions

How do I turn typed text into handwriting?
Type or paste the text in Content, pick a font, an ink color and lined or plain paper, then press Download Image. The picture is drawn in your browser with the font you chose, on ruled lines every 40 px at the default 32 px text size if you picked lined paper.
Can the letters vary like real handwriting?
No. It is a typeface, not a trace of a pen, so each letter has the same shape wherever it appears and the spacing is even. There is no slant, pressure or messiness setting; trying the four styles is the only way to change the look.
Why is part of my text missing?
At most 300 lines are drawn. If your text wraps to more, the page says how many lines and characters were left off, and they are not in the download either. Shorten the text or split it over two pages.
Does the downloaded image match the picture on the screen?
Yes, the file is the canvas as drawn at that moment. Until the web font has arrived the picture uses your browser’s cursive font and redraws when the font loads. The line under Font Style says which one is in use.
What is sent to Google?
The fonts come from Google Fonts, so fonts.googleapis.com and fonts.gstatic.com see your IP address. Your text is not sent. On load the page fetches the stylesheet for all three fonts and the font file for Indie Flower, the style it opens on; the Caveat or Shadows Into Light file is fetched when you pick it. Generic Cursive needs no font file, but the stylesheet has already been fetched by then.
What happens to a very long word?
A word wider than the line is broken between characters and continues on the next line, so nothing runs off the right edge. A line holds 660 px on lined paper and 720 px on plain.
